How to engage Nigerian millennials (Pt 1)

Millennials make up more than a third of Africa's population, says The African Report and of over 180 million Nigerians, our target audience, the Nigerian millennials, stands at over 40 million according to survey done by http://www.richeetech.com.ng

By 2017, the number of internet using Nigerians has reached 53%, (roughly 90 million plus of entire population) Jumia presented at its 2017 edition of its African Mobile Trends Paper. This growth can be attributed to the Lagos zip codes fast mobile internet penetration the continent as a whole has witnessed.

In 2015, ellacreative reported that 70 per cent of Nigerians online were under the age of 35 year old. Since that was 2 years ago we feel it's safe to deduce that that figure has naturally increased with the growth of internet using Nigerians as at 2017.

*Audience acquisition
It's no news that technology has very well become synonymous with millennials and the best places you can reach them in in social media and the internet, Huffpost points out, their favorites being Facebook (43%), Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and snapchat. 61% of these millennials find info from links their friends share with them.

Social media and mobile play a large role in Millennial news consumption. 94% of those surveyed own smartphones. The average Millennial gets 74% of her news from online sources. (American Press Institute). Millennials also appear to be drawn into news that they might otherwise have ignored because peers are recommending and contextualizing it for them on social networks, as well as on more private networks such as group texts and instant messaging.

The data also suggest that social networks are exposing Millennials to more news than they were initially seeking. Overall, just 47 percent who use Facebook say that getting news is a main motivation for visiting, but it has become one of the significant activities they engage in once they are there. Fully 88 percent of Millennials get news from Facebook regularly, for instance, and more than half of them do so daily.

- 6 out of 10 millennials believe that losing their car would have less negative impact on their lives postal codes in Lagos state than losing their phone or computer.
- 53% interact with brands on social networks.
- 43% have Liked more than 20 brands on Facebook. (Ideastogogo).

Also, the average attention span of millennials have been proven to clock at just 8 seconds (RicheeTech, 2011) due to information over load from content they have to consume on a daily basis from the web and social media. Worse, most news sites report stories with boring headlines and really long form posts that just don't sync with millennials.

Therefore We plan to reach these millennials by dishing out sensationalized headlines about 10 topics they love (drawn up from the offerings of several top millennial publishers worldwide) that drive user engagement as well as keeping content between 300-500 words, interlaced with much pictures.

As far as marketing and reach goes, YouTube is the world’s largest video site, and the second largest search/social discovery engine, so it forms a core part of our publication and distribution strategy. we plan to use the combined platforms of Facebook (through boosted posts in news feed) and Twitter (by amassing a large following) for distribution of non video content, and YouTube and Facebook video for video publications and distribution. Facebook videos have been proven to generate higher engagement levels while YouTube tops with higher views.

Our secondary acquisition strategy is to optimize posts for SEO for the long term. According to the American press Institute, when Millennials want to dig deeper on a subject, search is the dominant method cited by 57 percent (and it is the one cited most often as useful), followed by news sites (23 percent).
We aim to gain 5 to 7 million monthly visitors with the above strategy in 5 years.

The website we want to use to achieve this just came online 14 days ago and you can preview it here and make constructive feedback prior to launch.
